home

We're home. We had such a lovely time in Kentucky that I didn't really want to leave. You can't stay on vacation forever, though, so back we came. We're all so glad to be out of the car, especially Anya, who made the last 15 minutes of the drive feel like an eternity, poor thing. The weather here is beautiful, so I've opened the house to let the fresh air in and the stale air out, the kids are playing [somewhat] nicely on the deck, and I'm making fresh pesto and homemade pasta for dinner. The whole kitchen smells like basil...Life could be worse, I suppose.

I second the thought: Mmmmmm basil.

On another note, just having done it, got any suggestions for distance driving with a baby? We're moving about 6 or 7 hours away on Friday, and I'm in charge of driving the 5-month-old... I'm planning on leaving around her usual bedtime in the hopes that she'll sleep the whole way, as she generally hates being in the car. Any suggestions? Magical baby driving tips?

First of all, good luck with the move; we'll miss you here!
Second of all, leaving at bedtime seemed like such a good idea for us, but Anya ended up screaming for 3 hours until I sat in the backseat with her. Then she was peachy. Of course, if you're by yourself with no one to sit in the back seat...not sure what to suggest. Leaving at naptime seems to work a little better for me for some reason.

How did you keep Daniel entertained?

I will be traveling from Kentucky to Newton in three weeks with a 2 year old. We have decided to split the trip in two and stop in St. Louis to minimize the length of time in the car; but I am still worried.

Daniel is actually pretty good at entertaining himself, provided he has paper and pen to draw with and plenty of goldfish crackers to snack on.

Thanks Suze... I'll totally miss you all a great deal. Moving to the middle of nowhere without anyone I know except my family is totally freaky, though I'm sure it'll work out in the end, and we're very excited to have "real" job(s).

As for the driving, good to hear how yours went. I'm totally going it alone, but I don't think she'll scream for 3 hours (here's hoping). Usually, when she gets really upset in the car (which she certainly will), she screams bloody murder for 15-30 minutes and then conks out if I keep driving. She hates the loneliness and the being strapped in, but can't resist the vibrations and bouncing of the car for too long. Hope this works! Thanks!

I'd try leaving at naptime, but well, she doesn't really nap much. She sleeps like a champ at night (like, for 12 hours or so total, and often for 10 hours at a stretch without waking!) but only ever takes 20-30 minute naps during the day. I'm much happier it's that way and not the other way around though...
