Brutal

That's the only word I can think of to describe the test I took yesterday, the first of three parts of prelims. In fact, I'm not totally confident that I passed. I had to write essays on my choice of 4 questions, one of which was supposed to be substantially longer than the others. My long essay was good, fortunately, but two of the others were not and the fourth sucked. I'll spare you the ranting and raving I subjected my poor husband to last night, but I will say this: despite studying my ass off for two weeks (not to mention paying dearly for babysitting so I could read uninterrupted for a couple hours every morning) and feeling pretty well prepared, the questions I was presented with threw me for a loop. They were not what I was expecting, and I don't believe they were fair. I just hope that my one good essay and my academic record (which is stellar, actually) pull me through.

me too
Now that I've calmed down from my own panic moment, it's my turn to encourage you. If you're like me, you probably feel you did much worse than you actually did. There have been way too many times in my life that I've been absolutely convinced I failed a subject, only to discover I got a B or sometimes even an A. So don't be so hard on yourself. Your stellar record shows that you do an outstanding job, even if you're a perfectionist and you're convinced you didn't do well. :-)

Hacker's on the money with this. . The questions are supposed to make us feel like idiots and like we're not prepared. . They try and trip us up-like interrogators-and see what we say under pressure. It may be wrong, but unfortunately that is too often the way it's done. . So I guess it's not so much about what you know, but how you synthesize what you know under *duress*. .
hope very much that it works out. . have enjoyed reading of your musical findings!

Oh, Susan! I'm sorry to hear about how awful your experience was, but that seems to be the norm, I guess, so I'm hopeful that this is going to work out well for you. I can't wait until I can call you Dr. Susan!! : )
